General & Advanced Surgery

From spays and neuters, to mass removals, or other surgical procedures, WestVets Maxtown Veterinary Clinic has your pet's surgical needs covered. We strive to keep your pet safe and comfortable. We will thoroughly discuss your pet's procedure with you prior to the surgery and answer any questions you may have. For more advanced procedures, we can refer you to a board certified surgeon.

All patients will receive pre-anesthetic lab work and a customized anesthetic plan, including monitoring and pain management. In addition, we utilize radiowave surgical technique to minimize your pet's discomfort and maximize their healing. All pets are directly monitored. They will also have an intravenous catheter so that we can safely administer their anesthetic medications and keep them hydrated with fluids during their surgery.

Once they are out of surgery, they will recover in one of our heated recovery kennels and be monitored closely until they are fully awake. Most pets will go home the same day and we will personally explain their specific after-care needs, including pain medications, diet instructions, incision care, issues of concern, and when to schedule a followup appointment. We will take the time to answer any questions, and will also call the following day in case you have any concerns once they are home.

Spay and Neuter Procedures

Spaying and neutering are among the most common procedures we perform, and we approach them with the same thoroughness as any other surgery. Beyond preventing unwanted litters, spaying reduces the risk of uterine and ovarian cancers in females, while neutering lowers the risk of testicular cancer and can reduce roaming and territorial behaviors in males.
  • Spaying: This procedure involves the removal of a female pet’s ovaries and uterus, preventing pregnancy and reducing the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers. Spaying can also help curb behaviors like roaming and heat cycles in female pets.
  • Neutering: Neutering, or castrating, is the removal of a male pet’s testicles, which helps prevent testicular cancer and can reduce unwanted behaviors such as marking territory and aggression.

Both procedures are performed under general anesthesia with full monitoring and pain management. We'll discuss timing and the best approach for your specific pet's breed and health profile

Tumor & Growth Removal

Not all lumps are cause for alarm, but all of them deserve a proper evaluation. We assess each case based on your pet's age, the growth's size and location, and clinical indicators. We can perform needle aspirates in-house for a quick preliminary look, and when full removal and biopsy are indicated, we'll coordinate pathology review to guide next steps.
  • Initial evaluation: In many cases, a needle aspiration can provide a quick look at the growth to help determine if further action is needed.
  • Full removal and biopsy: Often, we recommend the full removal of the mass for further examination by a pathologist. This allows us to make an informed decision about your pet’s care moving forward, especially if the mass is cancerous.
Our team works with you every step of the way, from initial evaluation to recovery, to ensure the best possible outcome for your pet.

  • Common soft tissue surgeries: These can include removing masses, repairing hernias, or treating issues with internal organs such as the liver, kidneys, or gastrointestinal tract.
