Care for Puppies & Kittens
The Right Start for Your New Furry Family Member

The early weeks and months of your pet's life set the foundation for everything that follows. At Maxtown Veterinary Clinic, we love new patients — and we're here to make sure your puppy or kitten gets the healthiest possible start.
Early veterinary care isn't just about vaccinations. It's about establishing a health baseline, building a relationship with a vet who knows your pet, and giving you the guidance you need to navigate those first exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) months of pet ownership.
Puppy Care

There’s nothing quite like the joy of bringing a new puppy into your life. At WestVets Maxtown Veterinary Clinic, we love puppies and are here to give them the care they need to start life on the right paw.
We recommend scheduling your puppy's first visit as soon as possible — ideally within the first week of bringing them home. We'll perform a thorough physical exam, establish a vaccination schedule, screen for parasites, and discuss nutrition, training, and socialization.
Common vaccinations for puppies include:
- Distemper
- Hepatitis
- Parvovirus
- Rabies
- Bordetella (Kennel Cough)
- Leptospirosis
In addition to vaccinations, we may recommend routine tests, such as heartworm screening and fecal analysis, to check for parasites and assess your puppy’s overall health.
We also provide helpful advice on training and socializing your puppy to help them develop into a well-behaved, happy adult dog.
Kitten Care
Kittens have their own set of early-life health needs. We conduct a complete nose-to-tail exam, recommend a vaccination series, test for common parasites, and discuss spay/neuter timing and indoor vs. outdoor risk factors.
At WestVets Maxtown Veterinary Clinic, we strongly recommend early wellness exams for kittens. These visits allow us to perform a thorough physical exam, suggest a vaccination schedule, and run routine tests to ensure your kitten is growing properly and staying healthy.
We’ll also guide you through the vaccination process and help address any questions you may have about your kitten’s care. As with puppies, caring for your kitten is a team effort, and we’re proud to work alongside you to give them the best start in life.
Common vaccinations for kittens include:
- Rabies
- Rhinotracheitis
- Calici Virus
- Panleukopenia
- Feline Leukemia
Spay/Neuter Procedure
- Neutering involves the removal of the testicles and can reduce behaviors like roaming, marking, and aggression. It also lowers the risk of testicular cancer and prostate issues.
- Spaying involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus to prevent heat cycles and pregnancy. We typically recommend spaying between 4–6 months of age to reduce the risk of uterine infections and certain cancers. The timing may vary depending on your pet’s breed, and we’ll work with you to determine the best plan.
